Fuel Prices Set to Rise Again in South Africa
South African motorists could soon feel more pressure at the pumps, as the latest projections point to another fuel price increase in May 2026. Early data suggests petrol prices may rise by as much as R2.60 to R3.00 per litre, reversing the temporary relief seen in April.
In an effort to cushion consumers, the government introduced a temporary R3 per litre fuel levy reduction in April. This helped stabilise petrol prices at around R23 per litre inland, but the relief is expected to come to an end soon—opening the door for sharp increases.
The main drivers behind the rising fuel costs remain high global oil prices and a weaker rand, both of which continue to impact South Africa’s import costs. Ongoing geopolitical tensions have also added pressure to the global oil market.
If current trends continue, petrol prices could climb even higher in the coming months, affecting transport costs, food prices, and everyday living expenses.
