Veteran SA entertainer Soli Philander dies at 65


Soli Philander, a beloved South African actor, comedian and television presenter, has died at the age of 65 after battling cancer. His passing was confirmed on Thursday, marking the end of a remarkable career that spanned decades in theatre, television, radio and cabaret. 

Born Silamour Philander in Elsies River on the Cape Flats, he became one of the country’s most recognizable entertainers. Philander first gained prominence on stage in Cape Town before performing at major venues such as the Baxter Theatre and touring internationally, including performances in London and the United States.

He was widely known for hosting popular television shows such as Liriekeraai and Vat ’n Kans, and for appearing in TV series including Arendsvlei and Devil’s Peak. Beyond television, Philander was also a writer, director and social activist who contributed significantly to educational theatre and South African cultural storytelling. 

Philander’s influence on South African entertainment earned him widespread respect, including a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards in 2019. 

He leaves behind four children and a foster daughter. Tributes have begun pouring in across the country as South Africans remember him as a talented performer who celebrated Cape culture and brought laughter and inspiration to many.
