Laura Dern Reflects on Supporting Ellen DeGeneres’ Historic Coming-Out Episode

Actress Laura Dern is looking back on her role in one of television’s most groundbreaking moments, recalling what it was like to help Ellen DeGeneres publicly come out on her sitcom Ellen in 1997. Speaking on the Las Culturistas podcast, Dern described the experience as “one of the most incredible experiences of my life.”
Dern appeared in the landmark episode known as “The Puppy Episode,” playing Susan, a love interest whose relationship with DeGeneres’ character culminated in Ellen Morgan’s iconic on-screen declaration of “I’m gay” — the first time a lead character in U.S. TV had come out. At the time, the episode sparked intense backlash, including bomb threats, loss of sponsors, and the eventual cancellation of the show — and even Dern herself faced career repercussions.

Despite the controversy, Dern emphasized the episode’s lasting cultural impact. She’s been thanked by fans over the decades who say the moment helped them in their own coming-out journeys, and says being part of it remains a powerful reminder of why representation matters.

Looking back nearly 30 years later, Dern framed the experience as one of courage and connection — both with DeGeneres at that moment and with the many viewers whose lives were changed by seeing themselves reflected on screen.
