Eric Dane, Beloved Actor, Dies at 53 After Courageous Battle With ALS

American actor Eric Dane, widely known for his standout television roles, has died at the age of 53 following a courageous fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), his family confirmed.

Dane rose to international fame playing Dr. Mark Sloan — affectionately nicknamed “McSteamy” — on the long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. His charisma and depth brought the character to life over several seasons and made him one of the show’s most memorable figures. Later in his career, he earned praise for his work as Cal Jacobs in HBO’s acclaimed series Euphoria.

In April 2025, Dane publicly revealed his diagnosis with ALS, a progressive and currently incurable neurological disease that weakens muscles and impacts daily functioning. Despite the challenges of the illness, he continued to work when possible and became a passionate advocate for ALS awareness and research.

Dane passed away on 19 February 2026, surrounded by loved ones including his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their daughters, Billie and Georgia. His family shared that he spent his final days embraced by those closest to him.
