Xabi Alonso Leaves Real Madrid After Seven Months as Head Coach

Madrid, 12 January 2026 — Real Madrid have announced the departure of head coach Xabi Alonso, bringing an abrupt end to the Spaniard’s short tenure at the club after just seven months in charge.

The 43-year-old, who returned to the Bernabéu last summer as one of world football’s most promising young managers, has left his post by mutual agreement, the club confirmed in an official statement on Monday. Real Madrid paid tribute to Alonso as a club legend and expressed gratitude for his service, emphasising that he will “always be part of the Real Madrid family.”

A Rapid Rise and Sudden Exit

Alonso took over from Carlo Ancelotti on June 1, 2025, signing a contract intended to run until June 2028, after a successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen in which he won a historic domestic double and transformed the Bundesliga side’s fortunes.

The former Real Madrid and Spain midfielder initially began strongly in his first campaign, including a solid run of results that raised expectations among supporters and pundits alike. However, the team’s form deteriorated in recent months, with Real winning just two of eight matches during a tough winter period—factors that intensified scrutiny on Alonso’s leadership.

Catalyst: Supercopa Defeat to Barcelona

The immediate catalyst for the decision appears to have been Real Madrid’s 3-2 loss to FC Barcelona in the Supercopa de España final, a result that underlined the club’s faltering performance against their fiercest rivals and amplified pressure on Alonso at a critical point in the season.

Players and Leadership

Despite the downturn, reports throughout his tenure suggested a mixed response within the squad. Some players were publicly supportive, with figures like Jude Bellingham backing his vision, while other sources pointed to tactical disagreements and adaptation issues behind the scenes.

Arbeloa Named New Head Coach

In a swift transition, Real Madrid confirmed the appointment of Álvaro Arbeloa as Alonso’s successor. The former Real Madrid defender took charge of the first team immediately following Alonso’s exit, signalling the club’s desire for continuity and internal promotion. Arbeloa, who had been managing Real Madrid Castilla, returns to lead the senior squad amid a crucial phase of the season.

Looking Ahead

Real Madrid now face a pivotal second half of their domestic and European campaigns under new leadership. With La Liga title rivals pushing hard and Champions League fixtures on the horizon, the club will hope that Arbeloa can stabilise results and maintain momentum in the weeks ahead.
