Wrexham cause FA Cup upset, oust Premier League's Forest

FA Cup Drama at the Racecourse: Wrexham Stun Nottingham Forest in Six-Goal Thriller

In one of the most electrifying FA Cup ties of the third round, Wrexham produced a sensational performance to eliminate Nottingham Forest, with the Welsh club advancing to the fourth round after a 3–3 draw and a 4–3 victory in the ensuing penalty shootout. The match at the Racecourse Ground on 9 January 2026 had everything: early dominance, dramatic comebacks, late equalisers, and a nerve-shredding shootout.

Wrexham surged into a dream start against Premier League opposition, breaking the deadlock in the 37th minute when Liberato Cacace unleashed a powerful strike from distance that found the net. Minutes later, Oliver Rathbone doubled the lead with a clinical finish, leaving the visitors reeling and the home fans in raptures.

Despite Forest enjoying more of the ball, the Championship side maintained momentum. After the break, Igor Jesus halved the deficit with a precious header, but Wrexham responded with aplomb. Dominic Hyam rose highest to nod home from a set-piece, restoring a two-goal cushion and putting Wrexham within sight of victory.

Just when it looked like Wrexham might see out the tie comfortably, Forest’s Callum Hudson-Odoi shifted the momentum. Coming off the bench, he struck twice, the latter a stunning volley in the 89th minute that sent the game into extra time and Polesworth into frenzy.

The pattern of twists and turns continued through the 30 minutes of extra time, but neither side could find the decisive winner, meaning this FA Cup classic had to be settled from the penalty spot.

In the shootout, Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo emerged as the hero. After both teams calmly converted early spot-kicks, Okonkwo saved attempts from Igor Jesus and Omari Hutchinson, moments that proved decisive as Wrexham held their nerve to win 4–3 on penalties.

The victory marked Wrexham’s first triumph over Premier League opposition in 26 years—a remarkable achievement under the club’s Hollywood-backed renaissance.
