Venus Williams’ Historic Australian Open Return Ends in Heartbreak

Venus Williams’ record-breaking return to the 2026 Australian Open came to a heartbreaking end as the 45-year-old tennis legend was ousted in the first round in Melbourne. Williams, the seven-time Grand Slam champion, became the oldest woman to compete in the Australian Open singles main draw after accepting a wildcard — marking her first appearance at the tournament in five years.

Facing Serbia’s Olga Danilovic, Williams started strongly and took the opening set in a tiebreak. She even surged to a 4–0 lead in the deciding set, raising hopes among fans that she might secure her first Grand Slam match win in nearly five years. But Danilovic mounted a stunning comeback, winning six consecutive games to clinch the match 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4.

Despite the defeat, Williams’ return was a memorable moment in tennis history. Her appearance highlighted an extraordinary career that began at Melbourne Park in 1998, and showcased her enduring competitiveness even in the twilight of her playing days.
