Supercopa El Clásico Preview: Barcelona Enter as Favourites Against Real Madrid

Barcelona and Real Madrid are set to renew one of world football’s greatest rivalries in the Spanish Supercopa final on Sunday, with the first piece of domestic silverware for the 2025–26 season on the line in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The match — a clash steeped in history and drama — sees Barca enter as favourites not just for this game but as a measure of momentum heading into the second half of the campaign.

Barcelona arrive in strong form, easing into the Supercopa final with a convincing 5-0 win over Athletic Club in the semifinal and currently sitting atop LaLiga with a four-point lead. Under Hansi Flick, Barca have strung together a nine-match winning run across all competitions, showcasing a potent attacking edge when everything clicks.

This upswing in performance has coincided with the return of key figures:
Raphinha’s energy and goals have boosted the frontline,
Pedri’s influence has steadied midfield control,
and goalkeeper Joan García has produced crucial saves to keep the defence steady.

With only long-term absentees like Gavi and Andreas Christensen unavailable, Barcelona go into Sunday’s game not only in great form but with one of their healthiest squads in months.

Pressure on Xabi Alonso and Real Madrid

Real Madrid’s season has been less consistent. While Madrid overcame Atlético Madrid 2-1 in their semifinal to reach the final, their performances have been uneven and, at times, unconvincing. Manager Xabi Alonso’s position has faced scrutiny, particularly coming off heavy league defeats and mixed results since the season began.

Unlike Barca, Madrid’s campaign has fluctuated — with flashes of brilliance but also vulnerability — and this final represents both silverware and momentum for the rest of the season.

Mbappé Return Could Change the Game

Real Madrid’s biggest threat comes from the potential return of Kylian Mbappé, who has been sidelined with a knee issue earlier in January but is travelling with the squad and could feature. The Frenchman has been Madrid’s standout performer this season, contributing nearly half of their goals in league play and historically performing well in Clásico matches.

His presence would certainly inject dynamism into a Madrid attack that has lacked consistency this season.
