Senegal Triumphs in Dramatic AFCON 2026 Final

In a thrilling and controversial climax to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations—played in early 2026—Senegal were crowned African champions, defeating hosts Morocco 1-0 after extra time in the final held in Rabat.

The decisive moment came in the 94th minute of extra time when Pape Gueye struck a superb winner, sending the Lions of Teranga to the title and ending Morocco’s hopes of a first AFCON trophy in nearly five decades.

Throughout the tense final, chances were limited as both teams defended resolutely. The closing stages of regular time were marked by controversy: a late penalty awarded to Morocco after a VAR review sparked a brief walk-off protest by Senegal’s players before the spot-kick was missed, preserved the deadlock and set the stage for extra-time heroics.

This victory is Senegal’s second AFCON title, their first since winning in 2021, reinforcing their position among Africa’s football elite. Sadio Mané once again played a key leadership role throughout the tournament, even if he didn’t score in the final itself.

Senegal’s road to glory included strong performances across the group stage and knockouts, cementing a legacy of resilience and tactical discipline. As the continent celebrates, the historic win will be remembered for its drama, passion, and Senegal’s emergence once again as African champions.
