Catherine O’Hara, Beloved Star of Home Alone and Schitt’s Creek, Dies at 71
Catherine O’Hara, the Emmy-winning actress best known for her roles in Home Alone and Schitt’s Creek, has died at the age of 71. According to her agency, Creative Artists Agency, she passed away on Friday at her home in Los Angeles following a brief illness.
O’Hara enjoyed a career spanning more than five decades. She became a household name in the 1990s starring as Kate McCallister, the devoted — and oft-frazzled — mother in the Home Alone films. She later found renewed acclaim as the eccentric Moira Rose on the hit sitcom Schitt’s Creek, winning an Emmy for her performance in 2020.
Born in Toronto, O’Hara’s comedy roots began with the legendary Second City troupe and the sketch series SCTV. Her work extended to films such as Beetlejuice and numerous collaborations with director Christopher Guest in mockumentaries like Best in Show.
Tributes have poured in from co-stars and fans alike, with Home Alone’s Macaulay Culkin calling her “Mama” in a heartfelt message, and colleagues praising her warmth, sharp wit and immense influence on generations of performers.
She is survived by her husband, Bo Welch, and their two sons. Her family plans to hold a private celebration of her life.
